a modern beach oasis in venice, ca

A family compound of two connected boxes with multiple rooms and organized over two stories respond to the lifestyle and ages of a family of five (plus dog). Flexibility and change over time were considered in the layout assuming the children to leave the nest in the future and the option of a rental unit to be separated out when less space is needed by the parents.

The design emphasizes the use of natural light and a selection of modest materials, bright wall and ceiling colors and warm wood finishes throughout. The home itself has a very open feel with a large living space at ground floor that is open to above. Two walkways, on either side of the living area, offer a visual connection to the spaces below, while also maintaining the private spaces in the second floor separate.

From outside, preference is given to maintaining the privacy of the residence, thus creating a welcoming feeling of surprise when walking into this modern Venice oasis.

our process

The remodel of this artist compound in the heart of Venice started out by mapping out the existing structural components and envelope elements to remain. The programming required a complete reorganization of the interior spaces.

This was a very hands-on process, working directly with various trade professionals and contractors. The project developed over the course of 8 months, from concept design to finish.
